Senate Democrats Push for ICE Reforms Amid Government Shutdown
Sen. Tom Cotton (R-Ark.) expressed this week that Democrats are advocating for changes to Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), including a proposal to prevent ICE agents from wearing masks during operations. This discussion unfolds against a troubling backdrop of travel chaos at airports nationwide due to a partial government shutdown.
“Senate Democrats want to ban ICE officers from wearing masks so that left-wing street militias can detain police officers and terrorize their wives and children in their homes,” Cotton stated on Wednesday, marking the 40th day of negotiations regarding funding for the Department of Homeland Security.
“That’s why the lines at TSA are so long,” he added, pointing to the ongoing issues plaguing travelers.
While lawmakers seemed to be inching towards an agreement, Democrats continued to advocate for reforming ICE. Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-N.Y.) indicated that he would present a counterproposal. The proposed reforms aim to address ongoing concerns about mask usage within the agency.
Meanwhile, TSA workers have not received their paychecks, leading to severe disruptions at airports. There have been reports of travelers expressing their frustrations vocally and instances of scuffles breaking out. To alleviate the situation, the Trump administration dispatched ICE agents to several airports across the U.S. to manage crowds, check identification, distribute water to tired travelers, and assist in organizing lines.
Reports noted that this intervention, which began Monday, led to significant improvements at some airports that had been facing lengthy wait times over the weekend.
On the other hand, many Democrats are vocal in their criticism of this move. Rep. Veronica Escobar (D-Texas) stated, “There’s no reason for him to do that.” She characterized the actions as a “horrible, horrible idea that will only cause more problems.”
Despite a number of social media videos showing travelers expressing gratitude towards ICE agents for their assistance at TSA, the Democratic representative questioned the effectiveness of this strategy for keeping the atmosphere calm, given that ICE agents are not typically certified for airport operations.
“If I were an international traveler, I wouldn’t want to come to the United States to do business with a poorly trained fraudulent agent,” noted Grijalva, reflecting concerns surrounding ICE’s role in airport settings.
In response to the criticism, former Trump Border Secretary Tom Homan explained over the weekend that ICE officers are indeed “highly trained.” He mentioned that they are already present at various airports, conducting investigations related to smuggling. “We have TSA officers who cover the exits, and highly trained ICE law enforcement officers can manage these areas too,” he added.
