Raleigh Considers Minor Curfew After Violent Weekend
The mayor of Raleigh, North Carolina, is weighing the possibility of implementing a curfew for minors in response to violent incidents during the Fourth of July weekend. This past weekend, various altercations led to the shooting deaths of nine individuals across multiple locations in the U.S., with teenagers involved in these takeovers.
Raleigh Mayor Janet Cowell spoke to WRAL News, indicating her consideration of a curfew for individuals under 17. “As mayor, I commend the Raleigh Police Department for their quick actions during the youth violence incidents on the night of July 4th and the early hours of July 5th,” Cowell remarked. “Raleigh isn’t immune to the youth violence seen nationwide. We need to engage with young people, their parents, schools, and the wider community to grasp the underlying issues and develop more effective strategies.”
In her remarks, she suggested that a curfew might mirror those enacted in other cities across North Carolina. There is an ongoing discussion among city officials about various strategies that will be discussed during the upcoming City Council meeting.
On Sunday, the Raleigh Police Department noted around 5,000 teenagers gathered in Briar Creek and an equal number in Glenwood South, with many hailing from outside the city.
Police were called to the Briar Creek area around 10:05 p.m. on Saturday after reports of a brawl. This clash arose from a trend known as “Teen Takeover,” where large groups of youths converge in public spaces such as beaches and malls, often orchestrated through social media.
The fighting escalated, with gunshots fired. One adult was injured from gunfire, and another suffered injuries from glass debris. A minor was apprehended with a gun, although authorities do not categorize him as one of the shooters.
Later, at 1:35 a.m. Sunday, police responded to additional shooting incidents resulting in six injuries, all expected to survive. Separately, two people were shot dead following a confrontation at a gas station around 4:30 a.m., with both victims later hospitalized with non-life-threatening injuries.
Authorities are continuing to investigate these shootings. In a post on X, Cowell described the Teenage Takeover incidents as an “alarming national trend,” emphasizing the necessity for community engagement with youth. Cowell expressed that fulfilling this goal requires collaboration across the community.
Additionally, a post from a local bar, Milk Bar, indicated that while they had no safety incidents inside, they chose to close to protect their customers from surrounding anxiety. They condemned gun violence and disruptive behavior within their nightlife scene.
