Rally driver loses life in tragic accident in Castellon while brother remains in critical condition

A rally driver tragically lost his life in a severe crash Saturday night, while his brother remains in intensive care.

Samuel Ortiz, 30, died instantly during an accident on Friday night at the Rally de la Cerámica 2026 in Castellón, Spain. His brother was at the wheel of their car on road CV-189, which was part of the race.

The older brother, Jordi, 33, was hospitalized in “very serious condition” and continued to be in intensive care as of Sunday.

In light of Ortiz’s death, organizers swiftly chose to cancel the event.

“During the second leg of the Rally de la Ceramica on Friday, the number 32 car driven by brothers Jordi and Samuel Ortiz encountered a grave accident,” noted Rally Club Costa Azahar in a statement. “Co-driver Samuel succumbed at the scene, while the driver was rushed to Castellon General Hospital in critical condition.

“Being aware of the circumstances, the organizing committee opted to cancel the event out of respect and remembrance. We extend our deepest sympathies to Samuel’s family and friends and hope for a quick recovery for Jordi.”

The brothers were reported to be in a Honda Civic when their vehicle veered off course, crashing into a barrier.

When firefighters arrived, Samuel was pronounced dead from shock after they managed to extricate both men from the wreckage.

Since the tragic incident, the motorsport community has shared an outpouring of tributes.

Juanfran Pérez Llorca, president of the Valencian government, expressed his sorrow on social media, stating, “Devastated by the death of Samuel Ortiz at the Rally de la Ceramica in L’Arcola. My condolences to his family and all who cherished him. Strength to my brother Jordi, still in the Castellón hospital. A big hug to the entire family.”

“A profound sadness envelops our rally community. A truly great man who always wore a smile has departed,” fellow motorsport fan, José Ramon Planelles Sánchez, expressed on Facebook. “We will continue capturing your spirit through photos. Wishing a speedy recovery for Jordi, who is hospitalized with serious injuries. Sending heartfelt hugs to the family and friends.”
