Rep. Jamie Raskin, D-Md., said on MSNBC’s “The Last Word” on Friday that the Supreme Court’s decision to strike down the bump stock ban was like flying the National Rifle Association’s flag “higher than the Constitution and public safety.”
“Of course, that’s outrageous,” Raskin said. “It wasn’t just Justice Sotomayor that said this bird quacks like a duck and walks like a duck. It was the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms — the agency that said a semi-automatic rifle with a bump stock operates exactly like a machine gun and should be treated as such.”
He continued: “Of course, that was in the wake of the Las Vegas massacre that left 58 people dead, over 500 injured, and fundamentally changed the lives of hundreds of people, taking 58 of those lives. Trump at the time was at least pretending to support that action as an alternative to universal background checks for violent crimes and a total ban on military-style assault weapons. Now they’re getting the judges he appoints to the court and bragged about overturning rulings.” Roe v. Wade And they will defeat this too.”
Raskin added: “The American flag is flown upside down. The NRA flag is flown right-side up and flown very high. It takes precedence over the rule of law, the Constitution and the safety of our people.”
