Trump’s Summit in Egypt Focuses on Gaza Ceasefire

On October 13, 2025, President Donald Trump arrived in Sharm El-Sheikh, Egypt, to co-host a pivotal summit alongside Egyptian President Abdel Fattah el-Sisi. The summit aimed to bolster the ceasefire agreement between Israel and Hamas while discussing the future governance and reconstruction efforts in Gaza.

The event attracted more than 20 global leaders, highlighting its significant international relevance. Attendees included officials from Qatar, Egypt, Jordan, the UAE, and Turkey, as well as Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas, French President Emmanuel Macron, German Chancellor Friedrich Merz, British Prime Minister Keir Starmer, and former Prime Minister Tony Blair.

Trump’s visit followed a brief trip to Israel, where he met with Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, the Knesset, and families of Israeli hostages.

“For years, I’ve heard this is the biggest deal that’ll never happen,” Trump remarked at the signing ceremony. “They’ve long claimed the Middle East is the most complicated situation, often suggesting it could lead to catastrophic issues like World War III. But I’m convinced that won’t be the case.”

During his address, Trump also expressed optimism about the agreement. “This took 3,000 years to get to this point. Can you believe it?” he said. He emphasized that those who had worked for peace had finally seen their efforts bear fruit, invoking the hopes of millions around the world.

President El-Sisi called Trump’s initiative the “last chance” for peace and stressed the necessity of a two-state solution, advocating for Palestinian self-determination.

“I want to thank you for your crucial role in proposing a plan to end this devastating conflict,” El-Sisi stated during the ceremony. He reiterated the need for a political framework to pave the way for a two-state solution, claiming it was essential for both Palestinians and Israelis to move beyond the conflict.

As a symbol of gratitude, El-Sisi awarded President Trump the Order of the Nile, Egypt’s highest civilian honor, which is typically bestowed on significant figures or heads of state.

With the recent release of hostages—some alive and others deceased—the focus shifts to the implementation of Trump’s 20-point proposal. However, it’s uncertain whether Hamas will fully disarm, even though the group has tentatively agreed to let a transitional body of Palestinian technocrats manage Gaza.

El-Sisi also expressed intentions to collaborate with the U.S. in the coming days to lay the groundwork for Gaza’s reconstruction.
