Steve McBee Sr. Claims Coercion by Federal Authorities in Fraud Case
Reality star Steve McBee Sr. alleges that the federal government threatened to prosecute his family unless he accepted a plea deal concerning a multimillion-dollar crop insurance fraud scheme.
During an appearance on Todd Chrisley and Julie Chrisley’s podcast, McBee revealed that investigators approached his son, claiming they had been watching their reality show and tracking their social media. “We were just in the middle of episode 10, which hadn’t aired yet,” McBee shared. “And he told my son, ‘I’ve watched all your shows; I’ve seen all your Instagram posts.'” This, he noted, happened right at the beginning of the investigation.
McBee, star of “McBee Dynasty: Real American Cowboys,” stated that authorities were essentially “stalking” his family. “One of my lawyers mentioned he had never seen anyone so eager to go after someone,” he added.
He expressed concern for his family, saying, “It’s over for me, but I don’t want them to face consequences for my actions.” He mentioned discussions during a lengthy meeting, where he decided to plead guilty to one count of misrepresentation. “I have 59 LLCs, after all,” he explained.
McBee was sentenced to two years in federal prison. During a hearing on October 16 at a federal prison camp in Yankton, South Dakota, it was ordered that he serve an additional two years of supervised release and pay restitution of over $4 million to the USDA Risk Management Agency.
Initially facing up to 30 years in prison, he later characterized his case as a “trophy prosecution.” Reflecting on his impending imprisonment, he described feeling “humbled” upon learning about the conviction.
At first, McBee didn’t worry much when the investigation began—after all, he had run his business for over three decades and had dealt with audits before. However, discussions with his attorney made it clear that this situation was different.
He recounted the government’s approach during plea negotiations, calling it a form of “bullying.” “They said something like, ‘This is our final offer.’ They really pressured me. You either plead guilty, or we’ll pursue charges against one of my colleagues,” he noted.
Despite the legal turmoil, McBee remained optimistic about his family’s togetherness, stating, “We’ve never been closer.” He expressed pride in his four adult sons, describing them as hardworking individuals. After all he’s gone through, he claimed he would emerge from this experience “stronger and more ready than ever” once he completes his sentence.
