House Fails to Uphold Trump’s Tariffs Amid Party Division

The House of Representatives couldn’t secure support for President Donald Trump’s tariffs, as three Republicans openly disagreed with the president’s economic stance.

Late on Tuesday night, Republicans tried to push through a rule that would prevent Congress from challenging Trump’s tariff policies. However, they fell short, with a vote tally of 214 to 217. Notably, Republicans Thomas Massie from Kentucky, Kevin Kiley from California, and Don Bacon from Nebraska sided with the Democrats.

Massie responded strongly, suggesting the vote was an attempt to undermine the Constitution. He stated, “My goal is to protect the Constitution and represent the people.”

Bacon expressed similar constitutional concerns, saying, “I don’t like suspending the important work of the House, but Congress needs to discuss tariffs.” He believes that tariffs negatively impact the economy and constitute a significant tax burden on American consumers and producers.

He emphasized that “Article I of the Constitution gives Congress the authority over taxes and tariffs for a reason.” He remarked that it was time for Congress to reclaim its responsibilities, adding that he opposed passing rules that would limit the ability to debate and vote on tariffs.

Despite the setback, Trump loyalists like House Speaker Mike Johnson from Louisiana continued to advocate for the tariffs. He acknowledged the challenges that come with a narrow majority, asserting, “Three of us defected… I think that’s a big mistake.” Johnson cautioned against diminishing the president’s power while he negotiates trade deals focused on American interests.
