Recent Survey Reveals a Rise in Americans’ Trust in the Church After Previous Low Levels

Public Trust in Churches Shows Significant Increase

For the first time since 2020, public trust in churches has notably risen. Recent surveys by Gallup indicate that 36% of Americans now express a strong confidence in their churches. This marks the first significant uptick in confidence since 2020, closely aligning with the 37% level seen in 2021.

According to the Christian Post, trust levels in churches had previously declined sharply, dipping to 31% in 2022 and remaining around 32% over the following two years. Historically, support for churches reached a high of 68% in 1975, while the last similar period of widespread trust was 60%, shortly after the events of 9/11.

Interestingly, trust in churches varies significantly based on political affiliation, with Republicans showing a 64% confidence level, Democrats at 21%, and independents at 30%. Megan Brenna from Gallup notes that shifts in institutional trust correlate with which political party is in power.

“Partisan confidence tends to rebound when their party controls the system,” she remarked. “Conversely, trust in the opposing party diminishes when their party is out of power.”

For instance, trust in the presidency among Republicans rose by 73 points, while Democrats experienced a 58-point drop during the same period. Despite the recent increase in trust for churches, they still rank lower than other institutions like small businesses (70%), military (62%), and science (61%). Churches are grouped with police (45%), higher education (42%), and healthcare systems (32%) as mid-tier institutions.

In contrast, the bottom of Gallup’s 2025 rankings reveals lower trust levels for positions like the presidency and banks (both at 30%), public schools (29%), the U.S. Supreme Court (27%), and large tech companies (24%). Other institutions, including newspapers (17%), the criminal justice system (17%), large corporations (15%), television news (11%), and Congress (10%), also show low public confidence.
