Reddit has seen a surge in anti-Semitic conspiracy theories in response to recent attacks on American Jews.
Discussions on the platform often feature the term “fake flag”, suggesting that the Israeli government is manipulating public sentiment to garner support for itself and the Jewish community.
Interestingly, conspiracy-laden phrases were among the most prevalent terms related to a specific attack in Boulder, Colorado, where one victim later succumbed to their injuries.
Despite a hate speech policy update on Reddit nine months ago, which bans discussions downplaying violent hate acts, anti-Semitic sentiments are still a significant part of the conversation. An analysis by the ADL examined 6,000 posts about the Boulder incident and around 4,000 concerning a shooting in D.C.
While Reddit mainly relies on volunteer moderators and a few paid staff members to manage content, reports indicate that the persistence of anti-Semitic conspiracy theories remains problematic. However, the term “fake flag” was found less frequently in later discussions regarding the D.C. shooting, suggesting some change.
Moreover, as Reddit is used to train AI bots, the ongoing prevalence of these narratives poses a risk of broader acceptance in emerging technologies.
“The discussions on Reddit have an impact on the training of language learning models,” an ADL representative pointed out. They warned that if harmful narratives about Jews proliferate, they might influence these newer technologies.
A Reddit spokesperson affirmed that the platform upholds a strict policy against hate speech and emphasized that such content is not welcome. They highlighted that, while they don’t condone hateful remarks, the amount reported in this instance is relatively small.
Some comments, including those using “fake flag,” were identified as non-offensive, but the analysis revealed that certain subreddits, like R/Israelcrimes, are more prone to misuse these terms, often discussing Israeli military actions in a derogatory light.
Many posts alleging “fake flag” motives regarding the D.C. shooting claimed it was a smokescreen to divert attention away from other issues. One user suggested, “They’re not going to interfere past the Israelites. They’re willing to harm their own citizens… so this must be an inside job.” Another commenter implied that the attack was orchestrated to shift focus from the plight of children in Gaza.
