Reeves reacts to growth numbers while a former advisor suggests tax increases are necessary in the budget – UK politics live

Keir Starmer Praises UK Growth Figures in Albania

Keir Starmer has been in Albania, where he expressed his approval of the recently released growth figures. He stated during a press briefing:

These growth figures are quite positive and encouraging. They demonstrate the strength and resilience of the British economy, alongside its potential.

However, they shouldn’t be viewed in isolation. We’ve also experienced four consecutive interest rate cuts, which indicate that, especially in this uncertain global environment, the government is making favorable growth decisions.

While I acknowledge there’s more work ahead, rolling up our sleeves is crucial. This news is indeed encouraging for the British economy and beneficial for workers nationwide.

This news comes as the UK economy has shown a 0.7% growth in the first quarter of the year, contrary to fears of declining confidence due to potential tax increases and external economic pressures.

In a statement, Rachel Reeves, the Chancellor, noted:

Today’s growth figures reflect the robustness and prospects of the UK economy. In the first quarter, we outpaced the growth seen in the US, Canada, France, Italy, and Germany.

Amidst global uncertainty, we’re making appropriate decisions for the country’s best interests.

Reeves emphasized the importance of the growth numbers, particularly in relation to Keir Starmer’s ambition for the UK to secure the highest sustained growth in the G7. Current figures for Japan are still pending, but indications suggest a contraction.

Nonetheless, some journalists may want to challenge her regarding comments from Nick Williams, a former Treasury official, who posited that tax increases will likely be necessary in the upcoming budget. His take includes:

Even as the government gains momentum behind growth, the outlook for public spending appears unsustainable. We cannot meet the demands regarding local governance, crime issues, or defense without a budget that addresses these gaps. This suggests that tax hikes are inevitable, which should be approached fairly and honor campaign promises.

The next chance for such adjustments will come in the autumn budget, which could be the last opportunity to make impactful changes before the next election.

The agenda for the day includes:
