'Refusing to Surrender': Man Arrested for Allegedly Threatening Multiple Synagogues and Public Figures

Alabama Man Arrested for Allegedly Threatening Synagogue

A man in Alabama was arrested on Monday after allegedly threatening to attack a synagogue and a public figure. The sheriff’s office reported that Jeremy Wayne Shoemaker was found with a firearm, ammunition, and a bulletproof vest.

Authorities confiscated several weapons and a large amount of ammunition during their search. They indicated that Shoemaker, 33, was “not meant to be taken alive.” The arrest followed credible threats made against multiple synagogues in Alabama and nearby states, prompting alerts to the FBI and state prosecutors. A statement from the ministry noted, “A potential act of violence was averted in advance.”

Shoemaker was apprehended at his home, as reported by AL.com. He faces charges for resisting arrest and unlawful possession of a firearm, with additional charges expected.

Clark County Sheriff Dwayne Smith remarked that the suspect was heavily armed and appeared prepared to use his weapons. “He had various ammunition, both old and new,” Smith said, adding, “He also had a newly purchased assault rifle loaded with an extended magazine, indicating he was ready to go somewhere and use it.”

According to Smith, Shoemaker did not plan to be taken alive when the police arrived. “He was prepared to engage with officers, but his actions ultimately prevented that,” he mentioned. Shoemaker had visible injuries from resisting arrest.

The specifics of how he made the threats have not yet been clarified, and the investigation is ongoing. The sheriff’s office confirmed that this operation involved collaboration from various agencies, including the FBI. Smith highlighted the importance of a coordinated effort in successfully averting the threat, saying, “This was a total team effort.” He expressed his satisfaction with the outcome, noting, “I like that it says, ‘We prevented this,’ rather than, ‘What could have been done to prevent this?'”
