Rene Campos Launches Campaign in Fresno’s 7th District

Rene Campos, who is a registered sex offender, has kicked off a campaign for California’s Fresno 7th District, according to ABC30.

In 2018, Campos faced charges related to possession of child sexual abuse materials, and he claims that his campaign will prioritize safety. He believes that his direct experience with the legal system can contribute to potential reforms. “They say let’s pick someone who is outside the box, someone who knows the system inside and out,” Campos noted during an interview. He also highlighted goals like reducing violent crime and ensuring “clean, safe neighborhoods.”

Originally charged with felony possession, Campos spent only 27 days in jail, with the rest of his sentence served through “treatment” or rehabilitation, as per court records.

When the Daily Caller News Foundation reached out for a statement, he acknowledged, “I know what it means to face the consequences.” He elaborated, “I also know what it takes to rebuild. When a 15-year-old boy thinks his life is over because of a mistake, it’s more than just a headline. It’s a test of whether our system balances accountability with prevention and long-term safety.” Campos emphasized that protective policies should focus on enforcing consequences, which he believes is critical for public safety.

James Kuss, the Fresno County Clerk and Registrar of Voters, informed ABC30 that being a registered sex offender does not bar someone from running for office in California. After serving their sentences, ex-prisoners can reapply to vote, thus becoming eligible for candidacy in their jurisdiction.

Another candidate for Ward 7, Nav Gulum, expressed a strong opinion on the matter, asserting that being a registered sex offender should disqualify individuals from holding positions on the City Council. “If I’m the next Congressman for District 7 and I can’t come to tour schools, how can I represent the people in the community I want to serve?” Gulum remarked.
