'Remarkable' recovery for National Guard soldier shot in DC

A soldier from the West Virginia National Guard, critically injured in an ambush in Washington, D.C., is showing “miraculous” improvement, according to sources. Andrew Wolf, who had been in serious condition after the attack, recently managed to kiss his mother, a clear sign of his progress.

On November 26, Wolf and fellow National Guardsman Sarah Beckstrom, just 20 years old, were shot at a military post near the White House. Sadly, Beckstrom succumbed to her injuries on Thanksgiving Day, leaving friends and family shocked and concerned about Wolf’s fate.

Over two weeks after the incident, the 24-year-old managed to engage with friends in his hospital room in D.C., according to Justice.

Meanwhile, Rahmanullah Rakanwal, the attacker, is facing charges of first-degree murder and has entered a not guilty plea.

Wolf had previously been unable to speak due to a gunshot wound to the head but found ways to communicate his understanding to those around him. “He’s working hard and even laughing with friends now,” Justice mentioned, emphasizing the positive changes in Wolf’s demeanor.

Justice, visibly moved while discussing Wolf’s recovery, referred to it as a “miracle.” He described how well Wolf is reacting to friends who show him funny pictures, noting that he even responded with thumbs up.

“It truly is a miracle from above that he is alive,” Justice remarked. He acknowledged that Wolf’s family is also playing a significant role in this recovery journey. “They don’t harbor any negative feelings towards the shooter. That’s incredible courage and faith,” he added.

Melody Wolfe, Andrew’s mother, expressed hope for her son’s future, acknowledging that he will need “intense rehabilitation” moving forward. Dr. Jeffrey Mai, a neurosurgeon at MedStar Hospital, indicated that Wolf is now breathing independently and can stand with help, marking a key milestone in his recovery. He is set to transition from an acute care facility to a rehabilitation center.

“The care has been top-notch, and Andy’s improvement has been nothing short of miraculous,” both Melody and Jason Wolfe stated in a hospital release.

Senator Justice became emotional while reflecting on Wolf’s remarkable progress after what seemed like a dire situation. “I didn’t think I would see this,” he said, struggling to hold back tears.

President Trump also commented on Wolf’s progress, noting that, despite initial concerns, the soldier stood up today. “It’s pretty amazing what he’s done,” Trump mentioned, highlighting the positive outlook his mother maintained during the ordeal.

The incident has raised alarms about domestic terrorism risks, alongside new insights into the background of Mr. Rakanwal, who had served alongside U.S. troops and entered the country under President Biden’s Operation Welcoming Allies.

Wolf’s recovery is a bright spot amidst a tragedy that leaves many questions unanswered. “Right now, Andy is a miracle for all of us,” Justice said.
