Tragic Incident Involving Kindergartener’s Parent and ICE Officers
A kindergarten student at a small “social justice” elementary school recently urged school officials to alert nearby ICE agents, as reported. The child’s mother, Renee Good, was tragically shot and killed by ICE officers in Minneapolis.
Good, who was 37 years old, had a 6-year-old child currently hospitalized. The Southside Family Charter School emphasizes teaching children about political and social issues to challenge “racism, sexism, classism, and homophobia,” according to its website.
“From what I gather, she was quite involved in social justice causes,” said Rashad Rich, a former teacher. “It’s a close community here, with many activist parents.”
Rich, who left his position as a gym instructor last month, mentioned that the school discusses “current events,” covering topics from last year’s mass shooting at a local church to the 2020 killing of George Floyd.
“They strive to keep contemporary issues in the conversation,” he noted. “We hold circle discussions where kids can share their fears and concerns.”
Some students have also participated in trips aimed at understanding “Indigenous issues.” Rich pointed out that as tensions rose with nearby protests, school administrators advised staff to be vigilant about any ICE presence.
“We had discussions about reporting any sightings of ICE nearby,” he shared. “[Some parents] expressed fears about bringing their kids to school.”
Good and her partner, Rebecca, used to drop their child off together, often enjoying heartfelt farewells. “He really loved his parents. They made the school drop-off a special moment,” Rich added, emphasizing the emotional toll on the child now facing a difficult situation.
The school, catering to students from kindergarten through fifth grade, currently serves about 25 kids. Previously, it expanded to eighth grade with a total of 115 students in the last school year.
The unique curriculum addresses issues like “racism, sexism, classism, and homophobia,” aiming to inspire “critical thinking, community engagement, and activism.” Its mission is to support culturally and ethnically diverse populations, encouraging children to think critically and engage in social activities.
Officials reported that Good was killed after his SUV struck an ICE agent during an immigration checkpoint encounter. The officer allegedly fired in self-defense during this incident.
Newly released footage shows Good’s wife confronting the agents from outside their vehicle. The situation escalated when Good was urged to accelerate toward them, resulting in shots being fired into the driver’s side window.
