Authorities are investigating the kidnapping of a high-ranking Catholic bishop in Mexico. The case has sparked widespread outrage since the cleric made headlines for trying to broker some kind of peace between rival cartels that had been locked in a bitter turf war in his community.
This week, the Morelos state attorney general’s office announced that it is investigating the kidnapping of Salvador Rangel, a Catholic bishop in Guerrero state.
The incident began Saturday morning when Rangel left his home in Juitepec, Morelos, and was about to head to Chilpancingo, Guerrero. Details are unclear, but a group of men reportedly kidnapped him, stole money from his account and drugged him.
Unidentified men took the cleric to a local hospital in Morelos state, where he was admitted as unidentified.Authorities later identified him as missing Bishop El Unisar report.
This appears to have been an “express kidnapping.” In Mexico, the term refers to forced kidnappings in which armed groups attempt to erase victims’ bank accounts or collect only a small ransom before quickly releasing them. The controversy over this high-profile crime comes amid growing awareness that Mexico is unsafe due to the country’s government’s apparently lenient approach to drug cartels.
Bishop Salvador Rangel gained notoriety across Mexico when he used his position as a respected cleric to offer to mediate between two rival criminal groups vying for control of the Guerrero state. At the time, the cleric claimed he was only concerned about bringing peace to the region.
