REP. ARRINGTON: America’s Financial Situation Is Dire, But Trump’s Government Efficiency Commission Can Help Fix It

Political campaigns often drown out important proposals in favor of flashy headlines and horse-race votes. It's nothing new. But amidst the noise, there is one truly transformative idea that has the potential to reshape our nation's financial future. And it can't come soon enough.

As Washington heads toward 36 trillion dollars Debt is equivalent to $271,000 per household, or 20 percent of the total economy, but a fiscal crisis is no longer imminent. here it is. I'm getting closer to just paying the interest. 1 trillion dollars That's more than we spend on national defense each year. And almost every year there is a deficit. 2 trillion dollarsthe alarm bells couldn't be louder.

From 2019 onwards, government spending has increased by 52%, 40% of which is due to the impact of COVID-19 over the past two years. Yet, instead of resetting our spending and budgeting properly, we inherited hundreds of billions of dollars in COVID-era inflation.

America's trajectory is unsustainable. But it's not unfixable.

President Trump's Commission on Government Efficiency, proposed in September, is exactly the disruptive reform Washington needs to reverse the damage and put us on the path to restoring our nation's fiscal health.

Solving our nation's fiscal challenges requires a budget trifecta: public support, a plan of attack, and political courage. Past panels and committees have discussed one or two of these elements. President Trump's commission will address all three.

Leadership is the key. Recruiting Elon Musk, a brilliant entrepreneur and skilled communicator, to lead this effort, who also shares President Trump's business acumen and relentless drive for disruptive change, will help build public support. This is the key to building. Musk understands the challenges of communicating complex subject matter and the power of social media. This is essential. Because once Americans understand the risks associated with unlimited spending and debt, public opinion will increase for bold and durable solutions.

Trump and Musk could use the European Commission to focus on the potential irreversible effects of a debt-driven crisis and the urgent need to pre-empt it. . Without these changes, America's global standing would decline, its competitiveness with China would weaken, interest rates could soar, economic growth would stall, and the dollar's status as the world's reserve currency would be in jeopardy. .

The reality is that too many Americans do not understand the magnitude of the danger posed by the debt we face.

The European Commission could serve as a much-needed voice to amplify these growing risks. In developing an action plan, the committee will also quickly expose billions in waste buried in bloated, misdirected and unnecessary Washington spending.

The House Budget Committee has identified a series of common-sense reforms for immediate consideration by the Committee that will result in significant savings over the next decade. Reducing food stamp fraud could save taxpayers money 25 billion dollars. Save even more when you request a social security number to receive the child tax credit. 25 billion dollars. scrutiny $800 billion The green energy gift from Biden and Harris has been long overdue.

You can also save $100 billion We aim to achieve this over the next 10 years by expecting able-bodied Medicaid recipients to engage in some type of work effort. Rather than letting the army of bureaucrats in Washington sway America's middle-class families, abolishing the expanded IRS budget for smarter, more targeted efforts to root out tax avoidance and evasion would help the U.S. Middle class families will be liberated. 60 billion dollars. Ending Biden's unfair and unconstitutional student loan relief would further reduce the budget deficit. $400 billion. According to the nonpartisan Government Accountability Office (GAO), at least $236 billion – Half of the money we spend on defense each year – is spirited away every year through waste, fraud and abuse. Border czar Kamala Harris' self-inflicted immigration crisis alone is costly. $300 billion Over the next decade.

These are big numbers, but they're only half the battle. With public support and a realistic plan, Congress must muster the political courage to act.

If we want to reduce inflation, revitalize the economy, and repair the nation's balance sheet, we must start by cutting spending.

The Trump Government Efficiency Commission is proposing significant relief to address the paralysis plaguing Washington's fiscal woes. In addition to educating the public and building the necessary political support, it could help Congress break out of its pattern of inaction and begin making difficult choices.

Americans face a growing fiscal crisis due to Washington's reckless spending. But too many people, including their own representatives in Congress, fail to understand that without a major course correction, an unthinkable fiscal crisis may be inevitable.

Failure to restore Washington's fiscal health would not only jeopardize America as a land of opportunity, but also relinquish our nation's leadership and influence around the world.

It's time for bold ideas like efficiency commissions to get attention.
