Rep. Eric Swalwell receives criminal referral for mortgage fraud from the DOJ

FHFA Refers Rep. Swalwell for Mortgage Fraud Investigation

The Federal Housing Finance Agency (FHFA) has reportedly filed a criminal referral concerning U.S. Representative Eric Swalwell, accusing him of mortgage fraud.

In a letter dated Wednesday, FHFA Director Bill Pulte requested Attorney General Pam Bondi to investigate Swalwell based on allegedly misleading statements regarding his acquisition of a $1.2 million home in Washington, D.C., which he allegedly claimed as his primary residence.

A source close to the referral mentioned that Swalwell secured significant loans and refinancing using the home declared as a primary residence. This, they suggest, could lead to charges of mortgage fraud, insurance fraud, and local tax fraud, among others.

On Thursday, Swalwell (D-Calif.) criticized the investigation, suggesting it stems from political motivations.

“As the most vocal critic of Donald Trump over the last decade and the only one still pursuing a lawsuit against him, the timing of this development doesn’t surprise me,” Swalwell remarked in a statement.

He also pointed out that other notable figures facing mortgage fraud allegations from Pulte include New York Attorney General Letitia James, Fed Board member Lisa Cook, and Senator Adam Schiff.

The referrals indicate that these individuals may have misrepresented their properties to secure more advantageous loans.

Swalwell is currently engaged in a lawsuit against Trump, accusing him of inciting the January 6, 2021, Capitol riot.

“I refuse to live in fear in what was once the freest country in the world,” Swalwell said. “I won’t end my lawsuit against him. I’m committed to voicing my opinions and advocating for Californians.”

In September, Swalwell expressed his expectation of potential prosecution by the Trump administration.

He purchased a six-bedroom, five-bathroom home in the Eckington neighborhood of D.C. in 2020. Covering over 3,000 square feet, much of the original 1920s interior has been updated with a modern style, according to reports.
