Rep. James Clyburn (D.C.) on Friday responded to former President Barack Obama's assertion that democracy is a low priority for voters, saying democracy is at risk during the 2024 election. He suggested that Americans need to be warned about what is happening.

“As we were celebrating this country's 100th anniversary, I was reminded that in 1876 there was a presidential election…and you know what happened to democracy in that election? It led to Jim Crow. We connected,” Clyburn told CNN's Dana Bash.

“And there is a risk that the same thing will happen again,” he added.

Clyburn on Thursday responded to Obama and reflected on Democratic efforts to paint Trump as a threat to democracy, arguing that results prove Trump is a low priority for voters. did. “At a time when the country and the world seemed deeply divided, talk of bridging our differences felt like an academic exercise, far-fetched, even naive. Because for them, the election proved that democracy is way behind the people's priority list,'' President Obama said.

Clyburn said that while President Obama's assessment is “correct,” he questions whether the country should be heading in its current direction.

“I think they're true, not that they should be true, but they've proven that they are,” Clyburn said. He continued: “President Obama's assessment is correct, but the question is: Is it a good place for this country?”
