House Democrats Propose Bill Concerning President Trump’s Mental Fitness
On Tuesday, House Democrats presented a long-discussed bill as part of a potential move to utilize the 25th Amendment for removing President Trump from office.
The legislation, spanning ten pages, was introduced by Jamie Raskin, the Ranking Member of the House Judiciary Committee from Maryland. It proposes the establishment of a 17-member commission to evaluate whether the 25th Amendment could apply to the President’s removal.
This committee would include various doctors and former senior officials, selected by leaders from both political parties in Congress.
The bill specifies, “The committee shall conduct a medical examination of the President to determine whether he is mentally or physically unable to perform the powers and duties of his office.”
Democratic and Republican leaders in both chambers of Congress will appoint four physicians and four psychiatrists to the committee. Those 16 members will then vote to choose an additional member to serve as the chair.
A wave of Democrats in both the House and Senate are calling for Trump’s impeachment or removal, especially after a recent social media post in which he stated that “the entire civilization will perish tonight” in relation to the Iran war. Raskin remarked that Trump’s public statements have become “increasingly erratic, incoherent, and worrying” as tensions escalate.
“We have a serious obligation to create a body that will work alongside the Vice President and the Cabinet to fulfill the role outlined in the 25th Amendment,” Raskin said. He expressed concern that public trust in Trump’s ability to fulfill his duties has reached alarming lows, highlighting instances where Trump seemed to threaten entire civilizations or diminish the Congressional war powers, while also making disrespectful remarks about the Pope and sharing social media portrayals of himself resembling Jesus Christ.
The proposed bill has garnered support from 50 Democratic co-sponsors.
The White House responded to Raskin’s assertions by asserting that Trump’s cognitive abilities remain intact, while also criticizing Democrats for their past comments on former President Biden’s mental health during his presidency.
“Lightweight Jamie Raskin is not the sharp guy that some think he is,” White House Press Secretary Davis Ingle commented. “President Trump’s remarkable sharpness and energy starkly contrast the previous administration, where Democrats like Raskin chose to hide Joe Biden’s significant physical and mental decline from the public.”
Trump also defended his controversial remarks, claiming that Iran’s inaction following his threats pointed to a possible two-week ceasefire. He expressed an expectation that “the one thing they will give up is to sit at the table.”
“What do they keep telling us? I’ve heard ‘Death to America’ for years, haven’t I?” he noted during an appearance on “Sunday Morning Futures,” referencing Iran’s longstanding anti-American rhetoric. “They chant, ‘Death to America, death to Israel,’ yet no one seems to mind when they hear that. I think it’s worse – ‘Death to America.’”
