Some moderate House Democrats are unexpectedly commending President Donald Trump for a focused military strike against Iran that occurred over the weekend.
One prominent voice, House Democrat Jared Golden, noted, “Iran is ruled by a regime that is openly hostile towards the United States, forming alliances with others intent on undermining our nation. They kill American troops and civilians and support terrorist groups, which leads to ongoing turmoil and violence in the region.” He added, “Given the information available, I think the President’s decision to launch a limited strike is justified to prevent further chaos.”
Golden referenced the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), highlighting that Iran is nearing the capability to develop nuclear weapons. He said, “It’s crucial for the country to gain a deeper understanding of how this strike may influence the President’s decisions and the timing of future actions. We must also assess whether this effort has effectively hindered Iran’s nuclear ambitions.” He emphasized, “Most importantly, today Iran launched missiles targeting U.S. bases in Iraq and Qatar. The President, along with his administration and Congress, needs to prioritize defending Americans and preventing further provocations from Tehran.”
Golden expressed anticipation for an upcoming House briefing regarding the Iranian situation, scheduled for 3 PM on Tuesday, as announced by House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries.
The overall Democratic response in Washington to Trump’s military action has been predominantly negative, although a few pro-Israel lawmakers, including Senator John Fetterman, have voiced support.
Known for sometimes diverging from his party’s stance on issues like trade and national security, Golden’s views reflect a complex and somewhat individualized perspective.
In the Republican context, Golden recently won a competitive seat in Maine’s Second Congressional District by a narrow margin, even while Trump secured the district by a larger percentage in 2024.
In response to inquiries about Golden’s statements, the White House directed attention to Trump’s recent social media remarks concerning Iran’s missile attacks, particularly emphasizing the alleged lack of effectiveness in Iran’s response. Trump remarked, “They fired 14 missiles; most fell short, and one posed a minimal threat. Ultimately, we are not threatened.” He concluded, “The situation has stabilized; I appreciate the early warning provided.”
