Representative Nicole Malliotakis from New York criticized the “hypocrisy” of New York City’s Democratic Socialist Mayor Zoran Mamdani and Senator Chuck Schumer. She accused them of betraying their voters by not supporting a voter identification system.
“It seems that Democrats are really showing their true colors,” she remarked in an interview. “They tell voters in their precincts that they support voter ID, but then turn around and vote against it in Washington.”
Malliotakis urged the Senate to pass the Safeguarding American Voter Eligibility (SAVE) America Act, proposed by former President Donald Trump. This legislation would require voters to verify their citizenship before being allowed to cast a ballot. “If we want to build confidence in election results, we absolutely need voter ID,” she asserted, adding that “more than 80% of Americans are in favor of it.” She believes the only ones opposed are the Democrats in Congress, who don’t reflect the opinions of people in their own districts. “Regardless of party or race, people want voter ID, and those Senate Democrats ought to vote for it,” she emphasized.
“We need to demonstrate to the nation that we take election integrity seriously, and requiring voter ID is a common-sense measure,” Malliotakis added.
She placed particular blame on Senator Schumer for hindering the SAVE Act’s progress. “We’ve successfully passed it in the House four times now, and it’s the Senate’s turn to act. These senators visit their districts claiming they support the SAVE America Act, yet they vote against it in Washington. It’s time for the people to hold these senators accountable,” she stated.
Malliotakis expressed disappointment that Schumer often seems disconnected from his constituents. “Unfortunately, that opposition is led by my own senator, Sen. Chuck Schumer, who’s continuously at odds with both his constituents and the broader American public,” she remarked.
As the only Republican lawmaker in New York City, Malliotakis also pointed out Mamdani’s inconsistency in requiring identification for city projects. “It’s disheartening to see a mayor who mandates photo IDs for government-run supermarkets or who requires multiple forms of ID for snow removal programs while opposing it for voting,” she noted.
“This is the kind of hypocrisy we’re witnessing. Everyday tasks require identification, but when it comes to the fundamental right to vote, there seems to be a lack of accountability and transparency. We need to ensure that only eligible voters participate, proving they are from the district and are indeed American citizens,” she concluded.
Malliotakis also recalled an incident in Staten Island where Mamdani was booed and left the stage during an event aimed at supporting law enforcement. “This was a National Night in the Fight Against Crime, yet Mr. Mamdani has previously supported the defund-the-police movement. My constituents remember that,” she stated. “They showed their support for law enforcement and expressed their disapproval of his policies. In fact, Staten Island was the lone borough that did not vote for him.”
