Florida Rep. Salazar Defends New Detention Center Amid Criticism
Florida Representative Maria Salazar defended the newly established “Crocodile Alcatraz” detention facility, claiming it adheres to “the highest standards.” She engaged in an effort to counter the Democratic narrative that the conditions there are “cruel.”
Representing Florida’s 27th Congressional District, Salazar visited the center with fellow lawmakers over the weekend. She inspected the site and observed the living conditions firsthand.
Speaking with Lawrence Jones, co-host of “Fox & Friends,” she expressed her surprise at what she considered a misunderstanding by the authorities. “I thought it was a mistake from the authorities,” she noted.
Criminal Background of Immigrants at the Center
During her tour, Salazar interacted with some of the individuals detained there. “I could scream in Spanish. About 40 of them were tied up. I spoke to them and tried to ask… ‘How do they treat you?’” One detainee replied, “Pretty good,” while another mentioned, “It’s not that bad.” While she wanted to engage more deeply, it seemed they appreciated her inquiry.
Salazar managed to enter one of the cages designated for detainees and even sat on one of the beds provided. Admitting that being in a cage is never ideal, she described the accommodations as “clean” with a “soft” bed. Yet, it feels… well, like a cage.
Safety Concerns Raised by Democrats
Reflecting on the facility, she noted there were three metal toilets, modestly partitioned, for privacy, along with two phones available for detainees to contact their lawyers or family. Next, she described a recreational area covered in grass, emphasizing that it meets what she considers the federal facilities’ top standards.
Other aspects of the center included religious materials like Spanish Bibles, and she also mentioned plans for a space where inmates could meet with their lawyers.
Her observations come on the heels of Democrats who have recently characterized the facility in much harsher terms, describing it as “as bad as possible.”
Democratic Responses to the Facility
Florida Democrat Debbi Wasserman Schultz labeled the center a “detention camp” after her own visit, asserting the conditions inside were “scary.” Meanwhile, fellow Democrat Rep. Darren Soto described the operation as “a cruel political stunt” and dismissed it as mere “political theatre.”
