Rep. Tom Suozzi declares victory against Republican challenger in race for George Santos’ old seat in NY-3

Democratic Rep. Tom Suozzi is expected to declare victory late Tuesday and maintain control of disgraced former Republican Rep. George Santos' old seat on Long Island.

Mr. Suozzi received 52% of the vote, with Republican challenger Michael Ripetri Jr. narrowly receiving 48%, with 84% of expected votes cast as of 12:14 a.m., according to the Associated Press. It is said that it has been totaled.

“I think we all recognize that the American people and the people of my district are tired of extremism,” Suozzi told supporters gathered at the Garden City Hotel in Nassau County. Ta.

“They're tired of people always attacking each other. They want us to work together to get things done, and I think people are resonating with that message in this race. “That's the only reason we won,” he said.

The 3rd Congressional District seat, which covers parts of Long Island and Queens, was previously held by Santos, who became the sixth House member to be expelled from the chamber following a scathing ethics report.

Suozzi held the seat before Santo's 2022 election, but opted for an unsuccessful gubernatorial run instead.

Mr. Suozzi returned to power in a special election in February, seeking to complete his two-year term against a challenge from Mr. Ripetri, a former state senator.

House Republicans tried to block Suozzi's re-election, focusing on his relationship with Mayor Eric Adams, to no avail.

Ahead of the voting deadline, Mr. Suozzi was confident of retaining his seat, sources close to his campaign told the Post.

“They attacked him with millions of people during the special, but he didn't change his message, it's always been that way. He won by eight points,” the source said.
