Democratic lawmakers posted messages about Memorial Day that were so mocked and ridiculed that both deleted the posts.
Reps. Ilhan Omar of Minnesota and Cori Bush of Missouri, members of “The Squad,” appeared to misunderstand the purpose of Memorial Day in posts on “X,” the platform formerly known as Twitter.
“On #MemorialDay, we honor the heroic men and women who served our country. We owe them more than gratitude — they are well within their rights to quality mental health services, employment opportunities, housing assistance and the benefits they were promised,” Omar said. Tweet read.
“Patriots know the difference. You’re not a patriot.”
“This #MemorialDay and every day, we honor St. Louis’ veterans,” Bush tweeted. “To build a world free of war and violence, we must invest in universal health care for veterans, affordable housing, comprehensive mental health services, education and economic opportunity.”
Critics on social media pointed out that their message seemed to suggest the holiday was meant to celebrate veterans, rather than those who have died defending the U.S. Both Democrats deleted the posts, but screenshots were circulated by people mocking them.
“Ilhan Omar also deleted a tweet in which she confused Veterans Day with Memorial Day, perhaps realizing that we can’t give jobs and housing to military personnel who have given their lives for our country.” Responded The popular “Libs of TikTok” account.
“No. This is not to honor veterans. It is to honor the sacrifices of those who gave their lives for the United States of America. Patriots know the difference. You are not a patriot. At least not to America,” it reads. 1 Answer.
“How many times do these two have to prove they’re stupid?” Reply Another detractor: “Will anyone admit to voting for either of these two idiots?”
President Bush later posted a more pertinent message.
“This #MemorialDay, we honor those who lost their lives serving our country and remember the loved ones they left behind.” she wrote.
Omar posted a different message on a different account.
“On Memorial Day, let us thank the brave men and women who dedicated their lives to serving our country.” Omar wrote.
