Concerns Over Socialism in NYC’s Mayoral Race
New York City mayoral candidate Zohran Mamdani advocates for city-run grocery stores and free public transportation. However, Missouri Republican Rep. Mark Alford cautions that such progressive ideas, often associated with democratic socialism, have previously failed in other cities like Kansas City.
In his coverage of the district, Alford pointed out that a grocery store in Kansas City, called City Run KC Sunfresh, is on the brink of closure despite having received millions in taxpayer funding. He argued that if similar proposals were to be implemented in New York, they would also face challenges.
Alford’s comments highlighted a warning from NYC officials that local businesses could suffer significantly if candidates like Mamdani win.
He emphasized that the grocery stores in certain areas were unwilling to move due to high crime rates, rendering city subsidies ineffective. This, Alford noted, is part of a larger trend observed with Kansas City’s bus system, which introduced zero fares in 2019. This initiative, however, led to substantial financial losses, forcing the council to revert to regular fare collection.
The “zero fare” model reportedly resulted in a revenue loss of around $8-10 million in 2020, which was exacerbated by the pandemic. Alford indicated that while some costs related to fare collections were reduced, demand for services didn’t fully compensate for the lost revenue.
He mentioned that Kansas City will soon reinstate standard fares after a six-month suspension of the existing fare system.
Alford firmly stated, “Socialism doesn’t work in America. Communism doesn’t work in America.” He argued that since the previous election, Democrats have struggled to present a cohesive vision, pinpointing Mamdani as emblematic of that failure.
In response, Mamdani defended his proposals and pointed to a similar grocery initiative in St. Paul, Kansas, which has been somewhat successful. He acknowledged the importance of testing policies thoroughly, mentioning in a podcast that if a project doesn’t succeed on a small scale, it shouldn’t be expanded further.
Fox News Digital has reached out to Mamdani’s campaign for comments.
