Senator Graham Advocates Strong Support for Israel Amid Iran Tensions
Senator Lindsey Graham, a Republican from South Carolina, has called for President Trump to fully back Israel if diplomatic efforts with Iran fail. He emphasized the urgency of the situation early in the day when Trump urged Iranian leaders to engage in negotiations regarding nuclear agreements to prevent escalating violence.
While Graham applauded Trump’s efforts to encourage Iran to resume discussions, he firmly believed that if Iran dismisses this proposition, the United States should commit to supporting Israel decisively. “If Iran rejects this offer, it is in our national interest to help Israel finish the job,” he stated.
He went on to note that one advantage of this strategy would be to mitigate the damage caused by Biden’s ill-fated withdrawal from Afghanistan. “If diplomacy fails, this clear support for Israel shows that America remains a dependable ally and a strong force against oppression. It enhances our global position in various conflicts,” Graham added.
Graham’s fervor for aiding Israel came as reports surfaced about two U.S. Navy destroyers, the USS Sullivan and USS Early Burk, assisting Israel in countering missile attacks from Iran. Some other pro-Israel lawmakers, however, expressed hesitations about deploying American troops in the region, believing that Trump’s influence could play a crucial role in averting military action.
Senator Josh Hawley, a Republican from Missouri, shared similar concerns. He remarked, “We can’t imagine a situation where U.S. troops are deployed. The President is against it, and I trust Trump to safeguard our personnel.” Hawley noted that Trump had provided Iran with a potential off-ramp through previous nuclear negotiations.
On a different note, Makol suggested that the current Israeli strikes present a significant chance for Iranians to challenge their Islamic regime, urging them to consider the alternatives proposed by Trump.
Chairman of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, Senator Jim Risch from Idaho, expressed a shared commitment to protecting U.S. troops as tensions rise with Iran. He acknowledged Trump’s dedication to ending the conflict and preventing harm to American forces amid the ongoing Israeli-Iranian clash.
Israel’s operations against Iran were intended to dismantle nuclear enrichment initiatives and undertake specific attacks on Iranian officials. Senator Tim Sheehee from Montana declared that such strikes were expected based on Iran’s history of aggressive actions against Israel. However, he also echoed the sentiment that negotiations should be reinitiated.
“A regime that chants ‘death to America’ will never be permitted to wield nuclear weapons,” he asserted, emphasizing Israel’s right to self-defense and American solidarity with its ally.
In contrast, Senator Mark Kelly, a Democrat from Arizona, criticized Trump for undermining the nuclear deal with Iran, suggesting that the cessation of negotiations accelerated Iran’s path towards developing nuclear capabilities. Nevertheless, he advocated for taking steps to avoid escalations that could threaten American citizens and interests.
“We need to stay focused on supporting Israel while ensuring safety,” Kelly commented.
