Investigation into Alleged Bias on Wikipedia

Republicans on the House of Representatives Oversight and Government Reform Committee have initiated an investigation into claims of organized attempts to influence Wikipedia entries and responses from organizations.

Chairs James Comer (R-KY) and Nancy Mace (R-SC) are leading this subcommittee within the Panel on Cybersecurity, Information Technology and Government Innovation. They sent information requests to Mariana Iskander, CEO of the Wikimedia Foundation, on Wednesday.

The requests, as noted in a letter, are part of a broader investigation concerning “foreign operations and individuals at academic institutions funded by US taxpayer dollars to sway public opinion in the US.”

The committee seeks records and communication about Wikipedia volunteer editors who may breach platform policies, as well as the Wikimedia Foundation’s actions to “counter deliberate and systemic efforts to insert bias into critical and sensitive topics.”

In their letter, Comer and Mace pointed out that “multiple studies and reports indicate attempts to manipulate information on the Wikipedia platform as propaganda directed at Western audiences.” They also referred to a report by the Anti-Defamation League outlining a coordinated effort to skew content related to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict and other similar issues.

The lawmakers emphasized that the Wikimedia Foundation, which manages the Wikipedia platform, should take action against false conduct by volunteer editors who create encyclopedia entries. They acknowledge that nearly every online information platform faces challenges from malicious entities. Their inquiry aims to understand how Wikipedia deals with these threats and the frequency of accountability when concerning intentional misinformation or questionable behaviors on topics of public interest.

They have requested details on “the tools and strategies Wikipedia employs to detect and prevent harmful actions that introduce bias and compromise neutrality on the platform.”

A spokesperson for the Wikimedia Foundation stated that the organization has acknowledged the request and is assessing it.

“We look forward to addressing the committee’s inquiries and emphasizing the importance of maintaining the integrity of information on the platform,” the spokesperson mentioned.

Wikipedia has frequently been accused of politically biased entries. For instance, a report from the right-leaning Manhattan Institute indicated that entries as of 2024 might convey negative sentiments toward certain conditions.
