Republicans need to recognize the political price of supporting Trump's actions regarding Iran.

Washington, along with the world, finds itself in a precarious situation. The current administration’s president seems poised to take military action against Iran, potentially jeopardizing American troops in the Middle East, all without a clear strategy or any outlined consequences. Alarmingly, it appears that the Republican-led Congress has so far refrained from challenging this approach, remaining largely silent while military resources are being withdrawn without the necessary congressional approval.

It’s crucial to acknowledge that Iran is not an ally of the U.S. Rather, it represents a significant threat, particularly regarding its nuclear ambitions, which endanger our military personnel in the region. If Iran were to launch an unprovoked attack, the president already possesses the legal authority to respond in order to protect American lives.

However, just having constitutional rights doesn’t imply agreement with them. Under the current conditions, it’s essential to have Congressional approval for any military actions that are not in direct response to an imminent threat.

It’s evident that the current administration lacks a comprehensive strategy for dealing with Iran, especially one that includes input from Congress. History has shown us what can happen when a president sends troops into conflict without a coherent plan or a way to exit. As a veteran, I served alongside individuals who made incredible sacrifices, and I can draw parallels to my decade of service in Afghanistan post-9/11. We’ve seen mission creep and increasingly complicated military engagements over the years.

Some congressional Republicans seem to think that their failure to uphold their constitutional responsibilities won’t have repercussions, but I can assure you that veterans will hold them accountable for neglecting their duties.

It’s important to recognize the sacrifice of those who served. Many of my fellow soldiers made unimaginable contributions.

I have firsthand experience with disrupting Republican dominance. In 2018, amid President Trump’s inability to address pressing issues and with Republicans unwilling to hold him accountable, I was able to secure a victory in a traditionally Republican district during a Democratic surge.

Trump’s current approach to Iran, unchecked by Congress, is troubling. If Republicans continue to ignore their responsibilities and avoid discussing military action, they may face severe consequences in the future. This isn’t just speculation; it’s a certainty.

Looking around, it’s clear this administration struggles with managing intricate situations, whether they be foreign or domestic. From military operations to erratic trade policies that have hurt local businesses, the current leadership has demonstrated a lack of capability to navigate complex issues. Meanwhile, many congressional Republicans have merely acted as cheerleaders.

This is a pivotal moment that calls for accountability from Congress, a demand that seems largely unaddressed by Republicans.

What’s happening now might remind folks of President George W. Bush’s misguided war in Iraq. His administration led us into a disastrous conflict while his party largely stayed silent and failed to fulfill their roles.

The American public became outraged, and support for veterans reflected that frustration during subsequent elections. Iraq became, in many ways, a war owned by those who enabled it, resulting in deep losses that continue to resonate.

Veterans organized, campaigned, and supported candidates who opposed Bush’s actions, ensuring that those who failed to act were held accountable.

As a collective of veterans, we’ve worked to hold Congress accountable and have supported Democratic candidates who understand the true costs of service. We plan to continue this effort.

Even if Trump remains unbothered by accountability, those Republicans at risk must be wary of remaining silent as he treads a dangerous course.

So to the Republicans observing quietly: If you don’t take action now, you’ll have to respond to us—and ultimately to all Americans who are unwilling to lose their loved ones to unnecessary wars without proper discourse or accountability.

The decision is yours.
