House Rules Committee Vote on Epstein Files Blocked

The House Rules Committee hearing on Monday could stir some unrest among the GOP supporters. An amendment proposed by Rep. James McGovern (D-Mass.) from fellow Democrat Ro Khanna (Calif.) sought to address the situation surrounding convicted pedophile Jeffrey Epstein. This discussion came up amid a backdrop of ongoing scrutiny regarding Epstein’s activities and the implications for various political figures.

With Republicans holding a 9-4 majority on the committee, the vote aligned mostly along party lines. Still, the outcome was somewhat surprising.

“All Republicans on this committee should be able to vote ‘Yes’ easily,”

The amendment aimed to initiate a vote in the House to compel Attorney General Pam Bondy to “preserve and publish records related to Jeffrey Epstein.” Unfortunately for those supporting the amendment, Republicans voted against it, leading to a 7-5 defeat, with only one GOP member siding with Democrats.

Rep. Ralph Norman (R-S.C.) was the lone Republican joining four Democrats in voting to enforce the measure, including Rep. Teresa Leger Fernandez (D-N.M.). “All Republicans on this committee should be able to vote ‘Yes’ easily,” Fernández remarked.

She later shared a video of the vote expressing concern that Republicans on the House Rules Committee had suspended the amendment, questioning what they might be trying to hide.

Khanna also posted about the vote, thanking Norman for his support. “People are tired. They’re tired,” Khanna expressed. “We need to put Americans before the party!”

Interestingly, Rep. Chip Roy (R-Texas) was absent from the vote, and he hasn’t commented publicly on the matter, focusing instead on issues like Texas flooding and immigration.

The vote generated considerable attention, with a video claiming to show Republicans unanimously blocking the release of the Epstein files going viral. However, that video was later clarified to depict a procedural vote rather than the specific amendment in question. Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-Ga.) noted the misunderstanding, emphasizing that they were voting against the Democrats who have floor control in the House.

Here are the Republicans on the House Rules Committee who voted against moving forward with the amendment regarding the Epstein Files:

  • Chairman Virginia Fox (NC)
  • Michelle Fishbach (Minnesota)
  • Erin Houchin (Ind.)
  • Nick Langworthy (New York)
  • Austin Scott (Georgia)
  • Morgan Griffith (Virginia)
  • Brian Jack (Georgia)
