Melat Kiros Faces Scrutiny Over Foreign Policy Vision

Melat Kiros, the Democratic nominee for Colorado’s 1st Congressional District, has generated significant attention due to her ambitious foreign policy stance.

After her unexpected victory over long-serving Representative Diana DeGette in the Democratic primary on June 30, the 29-year-old attorney, who identifies as a Democratic socialist, has prominently advocated for an anti-imperialist agenda. Her goal? To create a “new world order” aimed at uplifting and empowering the so-called Global South.

The term “Global South” refers to nations categorized as developing or emerging, primarily located in Africa, Latin America, Asia, and Oceania.

Kiros won the Democratic nomination with approximately 53% of the vote compared to DeGette’s 40%. Given that the Denver district is predominantly Democratic, Kiros is anticipated to win in the general election this November.

Originally from Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, Kiros argues that genuine equity and international stability cannot coexist within the current Western-centric geopolitical system.

Instead, she envisions a reformed global framework that empowers leaders from developing countries to challenge entrenched hierarchies and reshape global governance.

This ambitious international agenda builds directly on the grassroots campaign that gained traction in Denver.

Kiros has formed close ties with the Democratic Socialists of America (DSA) and influential progressives like Senator Bernie Sanders, advocating for policies such as Medicare for All and the abolition of U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE).

However, her stances on foreign policy have sparked intense debate. Critics, including some Colorado Republicans, have focused on her proposals to build a “new world order” and her calls to end military aid to Israel.

On the flip side, her supporters see her words as a much-needed shift from traditional U.S. foreign policy, framing it as a humanitarian initiative aimed at dismantling systemic global oppression.

Kiros believes that prioritizing the voices of developing nations aligns with her domestic mission against wealth inequality and corporate monopolies. As she continues campaigning in her stronghold in Denver, where she remains favored to win, her controversial views have attracted independent challengers as well.

Despite pushback from conservative and moderate groups, Kiros asserts that her election reflects a public readiness for transformative change, moving beyond mere incrementalism both domestically and internationally.

“I think it’s crucial for not just our community but also for the Global South,” Kiros stated at a recent event. “We have to reckon with the existing global order and how it must fundamentally change in the future.”

Throughout her campaign against DeGette, Kiros centered her message around democratic socialist values. While her domestic proposals spurred usual partisan highlights, her specific remarks on foreign policy have incited unique nationwide controversy and criticism.

Controversial Statements

On a Local Firebombing Incident

In a June 2026 interview, Kiros was questioned about a firebombing in Boulder, Colorado, aimed at a vigil for Israeli hostages, which resulted in one fatality and several injuries.

When asked if she considered the attack motivated by antisemitism, Kiros replied, “I can’t speak to the intent of the perpetrator. All I know is that he attacked innocent individuals based on their potential beliefs.”

She hesitated to label it as an antisemitic act, stating, “I don’t know. I can’t speak to his motivations,” which contradicted law enforcement findings regarding the suspect’s openly anti-Zionist statements.

Describing Anti-U.S. Violence as “Inevitable”

Kiros also faced backlash for her comments on U.S. foreign policy and its repercussions. She suggested that attacks against the U.S., such as September 11, stemmed from destabilization tactics in the Middle East that led some to view violence as the only viable response.

On Criticism Regarding Israel

Kiros’s rise in politics accelerated after she was dismissed from a law firm for penning a viral essay on the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, where she criticized the legal establishment for targeting student protests.

She argued that calling for Israel’s elimination doesn’t inherently constitute antisemitism. Instead, she maintained that such rhetoric often arises from anti-Zionists advocating for a secular state where both Israelis and Palestinians would have equal rights, rather than stemming from hatred towards Jewish individuals.
