Republicans rush to approve rival health care legislation as time runs out on Obamacare aid

Republican Lawmakers Push Obamacare Subsidy Plans Ahead of Deadline

As the deadline to extend subsidies for Obamacare approaches, Republican lawmakers are stepping up their efforts.

The Affordable Care Act, championed by former President Barack Obama, is now at the center of health care discussions on Capitol Hill. With these subsidies set to run out at the end of the year, the situation is becoming quite pressing. It’s worth noting that these subsidies were a major point of contention during the recent government shutdown.

The new Republican bill aims to block funding for “gender transition procedures” and abortions.

In response to this urgency, several Republicans have introduced alternative bills. One notable proposal is the Medical Freedom for Patients Act, co-authored by Senators Bill Cassidy from Louisiana and Mike Crapo from Idaho.

With only a few weeks left before these subsidies disappear, Senate Majority Leader John Thune from South Dakota plans to bring the key bill to a vote this Thursday.

The Cassidy-Crapo legislation suggests allowing the Obama-era subsidies to lapse while redirecting funds toward health savings accounts (HSAs). Under this plan, eligible adults under 50 would receive a $1,000 deposit into their HSA, while those aged 50 to 64 would get $1,500.

This bill would also provide cost-sharing reduction payments and offer eligible Americans the chance to purchase “bronze” or “catastrophic” health insurance plans. Notably, it would prevent funding for “gender transition procedures” and abortions, as mentioned.

While a majority of Republicans are expected to support the proposal, passing it is uncertain given the 60-vote filibuster threshold. If all 53 Republicans cast votes in favor, at least seven Democrats would have to join them to secure a Senate majority.

In addition, Florida’s Senator Rick Scott has introduced a competing proposal, called the More Affordable Care Act, alongside August Pflueger, the Chairman of the Republican Study Committee. Their plan would create Trump Health Freedom Accounts, redistributing federal subsidies that typically go to insurance companies directly to individual Americans in these HSA-style accounts. They also propose a health insurance waiver program that would empower states to broaden insurance options and enhance market competition.

At present, there is no scheduled vote for Scott’s bill.
