Rex Heuerman Pleads Guilty to Murdering Seven Women
A man linked to the murders of seven women and their remains being found across Long Island, New York, has pled guilty, bringing a long-running case to a conclusion. Rex Heuerman, 62, acknowledged his involvement in the deaths of Melissa Barthelemy, Megan Waterman, Amber Costello, Maureen Brainard Burns, Jessica Taylor, Sandra Costilla, and Valerie Mack. He is also implicated in the murder of Karen Vergata, although he has not been formally charged for her death.
In a courtroom statement, Heuerman confirmed that strangulation was the cause of death for each of the victims and is expected to face sentencing on June 17.
“The defendant has an absolute right to accept responsibility and change his guilty plea,” his defense attorney, Michael Brown, remarked. “Ultimately, the decision resides with him. He chose to accept responsibility, opting out of a trial.” Heuerman was apprehended near his Manhattan office in July 2023 after maintaining his innocence for nearly three years before this admission.
His ex-wife, Asa Ellerup, shared her condolences for the victims and their families after the hearing, stating, “Their loss is immeasurable. The focus should be on them right now. I urge you to allow my family some privacy during this tough period.”
The investigation into the Gilgo Beach murders gained traction in 2010 when authorities stumbled upon multiple bodies while searching for a missing woman, Shannan Gilbert. Several of the victims were found along Ocean Parkway in Gilgo Beach, while another, Costilla, was discovered significantly farther away, in the Hamptons. Additionally, Karen Vergata’s remains were found on Fire Island in 1996 and near Gilgo Beach in 2011.
Heuerman’s connection to these crimes solidified in 2022 when investigators utilized vehicle registrations to link him to a truck sighted near a victim’s disappearance. Following his arrest, detectives conducted extensive searches at Heuerman’s family’s home, uncovering a cache of weapons and potentially incriminating evidence related to the murders.
With the plea deal for the additional murder of Vergata, Heuerman acknowledges culpability for eight murders in total. Prosecutors are seeking three life sentences without the possibility of parole for the confirmed murders, along with additional years for the other victims.
