Backlash Over Mural Comments in Rhode Island
A Rhode Island Democratic lawmaker is facing criticism online after stating that a mural of Irina Zalutka, a Ukrainian woman killed in North Carolina, does not align with Providence’s “values.”
“Ultimately, we want all of our community members who call Providence home to feel safe,” U.S. Rep. David Morales mentioned about the mural. “We can both agree that this mural does not reflect the values of Providence, nor does it represent the creativity we want in our city.”
His remarks, shared by a conservative social media account and viewed over a million times, quickly drew negative responses from some conservatives. Elon Musk questioned Morales’s values in a post, while a writer from Red State criticized the decision to remove murals honoring women like Zalutka, saying it reflects deeper issues in Democratic-led areas.
Erika Sange, the Director of Educational Communications, responded, questioning how honoring Zalutka could be seen as unrepresentative of Providence’s values, especially considering the circumstances of her death — a brutal attack by a repeat offender.
Republican Rep. Chip Roy also weighed in, asking, “What ‘value’ does the mural not reflect?” Kevin Roberts from the Heritage Foundation spoke about the implications of policies that keep violent criminals free, saying that memorializing victims like Zalutka serves as a reminder of these broader societal issues.
Other voices, including Texas Senator Ted Cruz, echoed these sentiments, suggesting Democrats might prefer to honor the perpetrators rather than the victims.
Morales later responded to Musk’s critiques, stating that using the deaths of refugees to push fear-centric policies isn’t acceptable, emphasizing that he stands for protecting immigrant neighbors.
Providence Mayor Brett P. Smiley also commented, stating that while he acknowledges the tragedy of Zalutka’s murder, the intent behind funded murals like this one can be divisive and might not represent the city accurately.
Zalutka was a 23-year-old refugee who was tragically killed during an unprovoked attack while riding a light rail train last year. The suspect, DeCarlos Brown Jr., has been charged with capital murder.
There are growing concerns about the implications of crime policies, especially in areas governed by Democrats. Recently, this incident has sparked discussions about potential reforms in light of similar violent crimes.
