LeBron James doesn’t appear to be in a hurry to decide on his future as a free agent.
Rich Paul, James’ friend and agent, shared his thoughts on a recent podcast episode. He mentioned that there’s no rush in making a decision about LeBron’s playing future.
“He has options. It’s a business decision,” Paul stated. “We’re not going to rush this or allow anyone else to rush it. It’s ultimately his choice.”
It’s been about three weeks since James informed the Los Angeles Lakers that they could plan for next season without him, marking his first time as a free agent in eight years.
This situation has drawn considerable attention, with some feeling he’s taking too long to announce where he’ll play next.
“From a business standpoint, when you’re someone like him, with an unparalleled resume, who would pressure you to make a decision?”
Recently, NBA Commissioner Adam Silver indicated that a prompt decision was necessary, as the league can’t finalize next season’s schedule without knowing James’ plans.
After Silver’s comments, Paul held a conversation with him, reiterating that it’s still James’ decision, and there’s no urgency.
He emphasized that James isn’t trying to draw attention to his choice, unlike in 2010 when he famously revealed his decision to leave the Cleveland Cavaliers for the Miami Heat in a televised event.
While some speculate that “LeBron loves the limelight,” Paul quickly brushed that off.
Since James became a free agent, rumors have circulated regarding possible interest from teams like the Cleveland Cavaliers, Golden State Warriors, Philadelphia 76ers, and Miami Heat.
He stirred curiosity further by saying “trust the process” at an event recently, which led many to think about a potential signing with the 76ers. However, he later clarified that he’s been saying that phrase since 2003, and it wasn’t a specific nod to the team.
On Monday morning, former teammate Patrick Beverley tweeted that there might be a decision coming today.
James seemed to refute Beverley’s claims on social media.
“These folks don’t have any idea,” Paul commented. “We can’t predict when James will make his choice—it could be in 48 seconds or possibly 48 minutes. Who knows? You can’t force someone to know what they don’t.”
