Massachusetts Woman Represents State at Fair Amid Boycott

A dedicated resident from Massachusetts, frustrated by state officials’ decision to boycott the Great American State Fair in protest of President Donald Trump, decided to take action herself. Donna Festinger, who personally traveled to the capital, made it clear she wanted Massachusetts not to be absent from the celebration of American independence.

“I came here because I didn’t want folks to walk into an empty room; I felt it was important for someone to be present,” Festinger shared, emphasizing her commitment to celebrating the 250th anniversary of the nation.

As part of the pro-Trump Freedom 250 event running from June 25 to July 10, Festinger will represent her state at the booth on the National Mall.

She expressed disappointment towards leaders from Massachusetts and neighboring states who chose not to participate, stating, “It’s actually embarrassing.” Festinger criticized Democratic Governor Maura Healey, suggesting that she doesn’t seem to appreciate the values of Massachusetts or America as a whole.

Attending as a retired teacher, Festinger has made plans to stay for the entire 16-day celebration, taking personal time and resources to do so.

In her conversations with media outlets, she highlighted that many individuals across the political spectrum—Democrats, Republicans, and independents alike—are shocked by the boycott and that it might serve as an opportunity for unity. “Most people are angry about it and don’t understand why the governor would do something like that,” she added.

Conversely, Governor Healey has openly criticized the event, calling it a sham, and maintained her stance against the former president. Responding to questions about whether she would welcome Trump in the state, she took a dismissive tone, stating he was merely using the fair for his own benefit, although she didn’t provide evidence for these claims.

Interestingly, Festinger received unexpected support from a fellow attendee, Judith Calaola, who honored a Revolutionary War soldier at the fair to celebrate Massachusetts’ history. “I believe the United States has accomplished more in 250 years than any other nation in a much longer timeframe,” she noted.

It’s worth mentioning that eleven states with Democratic leadership decided not to host their fairs, citing concerns of partisan political overtones. Oregon’s officials specifically communicated they felt participation was becoming overly politicized.

Nonetheless, the mood among attendees appeared optimistic, with Festinger and others believing that focus on American heritage could unite people across differing views. “Times change, emotions change, and that’s okay as long as we remember that we did something great,” Calaola concluded, expressing her gratitude for being part of the fair.
