Rick Scott Speaks on Immigration and TPS for Haitians

During an interview with ABC News on Monday, Senator Rick Scott (R-Fla.) highlighted the substantial Haitian community in his state, expressing his support for their opportunity to immigrate to the U.S. However, he pointed out that the Temporary Protected Status (TPS) doesn’t provide a permanent solution. “We have to reform the entire immigration system to assist them,” he stated, emphasizing the need for a system that can properly vet individuals wishing to make a life here.

Host Lindsey Davis noted that Florida has the highest number of Haitians under TPS in the nation, with over 100,000 individuals at risk of deportation. She asked if he thought these refugees should be returned to Haiti given the current circumstances. Scott responded that the Biden administration had mishandled the TPS and parole systems, claiming, “What Trump did was enforce the law.” He maintained that the intention behind TPS was always temporary, stressing the importance of a well-functioning immigration system to welcome those who aspire to live under capitalism.

Davis raised concerns about the dangerous situation in Haiti and whether Scott was worried about the safety of those being forced back. Scott acknowledged this concern, revealing that he had previously rallied Republican support for amendments to the TPS system—intended to allow Congress to decide the fate of individuals once their temporary status expired. He lamented that Democrats had obstructed these efforts in the past. Ultimately, he reiterated the need for a comprehensive overhaul of the immigration system to ensure proper vetting, allowing those committed to contributing positively to society to stay.
