Risk to US bases in the Middle East stays high after attacks on Iran

Iran’s Reaction to Recent Strikes

Iran has stated that the United States, as a supporter of Israel, will be held fully accountable for the recent series of strikes against Tehran’s nuclear and military facilities, which targeted senior officials. This follows a significant attack that reportedly killed four military commanders involved in nuclear negotiations with the U.S. Two Iranian officials indicated that Israel’s actions in the region could represent a severe threat to global security.

Interestingly, just days before a scheduled discussion between the U.S. and Iran in Oman regarding nuclear talks, Iranian Defense Minister Aziz Nasirzadeh warned of potential attacks on U.S. bases in the Middle East.

Nasirzadeh commented that some officials on the opposing side might escalate the conflict if negotiations falter. He emphasized, “If a conflict is imposed on us… all U.S. bases are within our reach, and we will target them in our host countries.” This comes amid reports that Jerusalem is contemplating strikes on Iran’s nuclear sites.

In a significant development, the Trump administration initiated a partial evacuation of the U.S. embassy in Iraq, allowing military dependents to leave, though it’s unclear how many Americans are exiting the region.

President Trump defiantly stated that the decision was made due to safety concerns. He mentioned, “We have a lot of Americans in the area… I had to do it.” Trump conveyed urgency in safeguarding U.S. personnel, as tensions between Israel and Iran heightened.

Defense officials noted that around 40,000 U.S. service members are currently deployed across the Middle East. Many of these troops are strikingly positioned within a short distance of Iran. There are approximately 19 military sites in the region, eight of which are permanent bases located in countries neighboring Iran.

Despite the recent heightened tensions, Iran’s apparent lack of immediate response to Israel’s strikes has raised questions about whether Tehran might opt for a direct conflict with the U.S. There’s a sense that Iran might also be aiming to distance itself from Israel while navigating this complex political landscape.

Political analysts suggest that the Iranian government is trying to capitalize on U.S. internal tensions to create a divide between America and its ally, Israel. They believe Tehran’s efforts aim to present America more as a bystander in the Middle Eastern crisis rather than an involved participant.
