RNC member: ‘Totally misleading’ to spend campaign funds on Trump legal fees

A member of the Republican National Committee (RNC) said it is “totally misleading” that the committee would spend campaign funds on the legal costs of candidates, including former President Trump.

RNC Commissioner Henry Barber of Mississippi introduced two draft resolutions over the weekend that would block the committee from paying Trump’s legal fees and ensure neutrality in the Republican primary. He said in an interview with CNN’s Dana Bash on “Inside Politics” on Monday that the RNC should put that money to use. to win the electionwill not reimburse anyone’s external charges.

“Well, I’m certainly going to take a position that may be unpopular with some people at this point. The RNC has one job, Dana, and that’s to win elections. And we… “Limited resources should be spent on political action and actually winning elections, and it’s not the RNC’s job to pay for candidates’ legal costs or, frankly, other outside costs and expenses,” Barbour said. Ta.

Barbour, a longtime RNC member, said it was “misleading” to ask voters to donate to the campaign fund, which the RNC then spends on legal bills.

“When the RNC sends out a solicitation, they say, ‘Hey, do you want to take back the White House and get the country back on track?'” Donors send $28 or something…and they take that money. And it would be completely misleading to go to a big law firm and spend that money on legal fees that have nothing to do with winning the election. ” Barber said.

He also said the Trump campaign is “getting ahead of the curve” by claiming that the Republican primary will be over once only four states vote. Mr. Baber’s statement is Statement given to CNN “It is the RNC’s sole responsibility to defeat Joe Biden and take back the White House,” senior Trump adviser Chris Lacivita said over the weekend.

“And a lot of the Trump campaign is very talented people. So I think that’s appreciated. But they need to respect the rules of the RNC. Number one, we have to be neutral, Second, resources should be spent on winning elections, not on legal fees for any type of candidate,” Barbour said.

Trump easily defeated challenger Nikki Haley in the South Carolina primary on Saturday and is likely to remain the Republican nominee. He recently nominated his daughter-in-law, Lara Trump, and North Carolina Republican Party Chairman Michael Whatley to co-chair the committee.

RNC Chairwoman Ronna McDaniel announced Monday that she would resign on March 8, having previously indicated she would step down after the South Carolina primary. With Lara Trump set to take over as head of the RNC, questions remain about whether the committee will help defray Trump’s mounting legal costs.
