A small school in rural southwest Arkansas received an unexpected gift when NFL star Rob Gronkowski arrived with a check for $1 million. Dierks High School, situated in a town of about 900 residents, secured victory in T-Mobile’s Friday Night 5G Lights contest, which involved schools competing for votes to fund a complete renovation of their football stadium. This year, over 8 million votes were cast.
“This is about giving back to the community and supporting the kids,” Gronkowski shared with “Fox & Friends” host Steve Doocy during last Friday’s event.
The students rallied support from their town, state, and even some famous names, earning them the highest vote count in the nation. Notable figures like former NFL running back Darren McFadden, Arkansas Governor Sarah Huckabee Sanders, and comedian Jeff Foxworthy were among those who backed Dierks. T-Mobile characterized the school’s win as an inspiring “underdog” story.
“In what showcases the essence of small-town America, a community of just 900 people came together, encouraging others worldwide to join their mission,” T-Mobile stated.
Gronkowski’s surprise appearance included him unveiling a giant check, generating enthusiastic applause from the audience. He noted to Doocy that even a small donation could significantly energize a school.
Reflecting on his own experiences, Gronkowski recalled, “I remember getting a new jersey in high school, and it was one of the coolest feelings ever. It really motivated me to perform better.” The school currently plans to use the funds to renovate an outdated soccer field and football stadium, with T-Mobile planning to organize a celebratory tailgate party in 2026 to showcase the enhancements.
