Robbie Starbuck, a conservative author and activist, made headlines on Friday as he addressed issues surrounding an AI search engine that has been spreading misinformation about him.
“This is a first for me, witnessing something like this in the midst of a major lawsuit,” he noted. “It’s odd to see them say, ‘Yeah, we did that. Sorry about it.'” He commented on the “balance” in interviews with News Nation.
Starbuck, a conservative filmmaker, accused Meta’s platform of mistakenly claiming he was part of the Capitol riots on January 6, 2021, which led to a guilty plea for disorderly conduct. He has since filed a lawsuit against the companies that own Facebook and Instagram.
After about nine months of litigation, Meta executives reached out to Starbuck and offered an apology.
Joel Kaplan, Meta’s chief global affairs officer, remarked, “I saw your video—this is unacceptable,” in a post on Social Platform X.
In the wake of the apology, Starbuck emphasized the broader implications of how AI and misinformation could impact future elections. “I’m not just doing this for myself; I want to address this for everyone involved,” he shared with host Leland Vittert.
“Regardless of political affiliation, it’s crucial to stop this for all,” he added.
When questioned about seeking damages, he affirmed, “Yes, definitely.” He expressed the personal toll, saying, “It’s hurtful, much like other reputational damages.”
Starbuck further explained, “People imagined I was a criminal when I honestly wasn’t involved in any crimes. There were rumors that my children might be taken from me, and they witnessed people coming up to me under that false impression… I was arrested for something that never happened.”
He also mentioned receiving death threats spurred by misinformation.
Starbuck is pursuing over $5,000,000 in both compensatory and punitive damages, as outlined in his lawsuit.
This legal action followed Meta’s recent launch of a new AI assistant, which aims to provide more “personal” and “relevant” responses. The application utilizes the Llama 4 coding model to gather information across its platform. press release.
