Actor Robert De Niro slammed former President Donald Trump on Friday, saying he is likely to be the Republican presidential nominee in November.
“That guy is an absolute monster…I don’t understand” De Niro said on friday On HBO’s “Real Time with Bill Maher,” he cited polls showing Republican front-runner President Biden leading, calling President Trump “a very mean, mean, hateful person.” added.
He added that he would turn down a role that required him to play President Trump because “I don’t see anything good about him.”
“Nothing,” De Niro told Maher. “There is nothing irredeemable in him.”
He warned that a second Trump administration would be “dangerous,” alluding to the former president’s comments.
“Something is going to happen that none of us can imagine,” he said Friday. “He says this is what happens in that kind of dictatorship. Let’s take him at his word.”
“So he’s a sociopath, a psychopath, a malignant narcissist,” he added. “He’s a dangerous person.”
President Trump fired back Saturday. in post Truth Social called the actor’s comments “stupid.”
“Robert De Niro is in the terminal stages of Trump Derangement Syndrome,” he wrote. “What an idiot, you have a low IQ!”
Mr. De Niro made a similar argument against the Republican presidential front-runner last year, claiming that “democracy cannot survive” if Mr. Trump is re-elected. At the time, he also called himself a “wannabe dictator.”
“I have spent a lot of time studying bad people,” the actor said in a statement read in October by former President Trump aide Miles Taylor. “I’ve studied their characteristics, their quirks, the sheer banality of their brutality. But there’s something different about Donald Trump.”
“When I look at him, I don’t see a bad guy. Really. I see something evil,” he added at the time.
After spending time knocking the president in his acceptance speech late last year, De Niro said he should focus on “my life, which is in turmoil, not other people’s lives.”
“As the world watched, waited, and laughed, he turned out to be a total loser!” Trump wrote.
