The Senate approved Rodney S. Scott to take on the role as the head of US Customs and Border Protection (CBP) under President Donald Trump. On Wednesday, 51 Republican senators cast their votes in favor of Scott, while not a single Democrat supported the appointment of a former Border Patrol chief to lead CBP.
Scott previously held the position of the 24th Chief of the US Border Patrol before he stepped down in 2021. His tenure with the Border Patrol stretched over 29 years, beginning in 1992 within the San Diego sector at Imperial Beach, California. Throughout his career, Scott advanced through various border patrol sectors, eventually becoming the Chief Patrol Agent at the El Centro Sector. He was appointed Chief of the Border Patrol in 2020 and served until his retirement.

Commissioner Scott will be the first Border Patrol agent to ascend from the lowest rank (GS-5) to lead US Customs and Border Protection, which aligns with his pro-marine perspective.
As reported by Breitbart Texas, the then-presidential candidate announced Scott as a nominee for CBP in December. In a post on his future social media platform, Truth Social, Trump highlighted Scott’s extensive immigration policy experience and his previous service in the Trump administration’s border efforts.
Trump remarked, “Rodney has nearly 30 years with the Border Patrol, acquiring significant knowledge and experience in law enforcement. As the 24th Chief of the US Border Patrol, he implemented key policies like Remain in Mexico and Title 42, which contributed to record low levels of illegal immigration.”
Scott is a well-regarded leader among border patrol agents, playing a crucial role in formulating immigration enforcement policies that resulted in historically low immigration levels. His efforts were vital in implementing the Migration Protection Protocol (MPP), allowing CBP and ICE to return migrants to Mexico as they navigated the court system. This program was quite innovative and unprecedented.
Moreover, Scott has developed and enacted agreements under the Asylum Cooperative Agreement (ACAS) with countries in Northern Central America, specifically El Salvador, Guatemala, and Honduras. This initiative allows migrants fearing return to their home countries to seek refuge in these nearby nations.
During the COVID-19 pandemic, Scott collaborated with Trump’s team to coordinate Title 42 emergency measures mandated by the CDC.
According to CBP, it stands as the largest law enforcement agency in the country and the first unified border control agency globally. Over 65,000 personnel work to ensure the safety of America across land, air, and sea.
