The Republican-led Texas House of Representatives failed to pass an amendment to the state constitution that would have required proof of citizenship before allowing people to register to vote.
Despite narratives proclaiming the contrary, election integrity is a relatively easy problem to address, and it starts with ensuring that only eligible citizens vote.
There’s no denying that Texas is at the forefront of illegal immigration. President Biden is keeping the southern border open and allowing large numbers of illegal immigrants into the country. Instead of stopping the invasion, the Biden administration is actively fighting all efforts by the Texas government to protect Texas territory from the influx of unvetted people entering the state.
On Super Tuesday, more than 96% of Republican primary voters supported Proposition 12 signals the Texas Legislature to pass a constitutional amendment that would require proof of citizenship to vote. Republican state Rep. Brian Harrison told the Daily Caller that under the leadership of Republican Speaker Dade Phelan, the Texas House of Representatives is “just as they killed every other election integrity priority in the last Congress.” “Republican voters will be furious to know that they have also killed this election integrity priority.” ”

Mr. Harrison is SJR35 If passed by the 88th Congress, the Texas Constitution would be amended to give only American citizens the right to vote. (Luke: Democrats are already preparing new election law shenanigans for 2024)
SJR35 passed it It passed in the Texas Senate by a vote of 21-9-1. All Senate Republicans and two Democrats voted in favor of the new requirements. Nine Democrats voted against the bill, and only one voted absentee.
The story in the Texas House was much different. Harrison told the Daily Caller that Speaker Phelan has not prioritized citizenship requirements, even though election integrity is a top issue for Republican voters.
Amendment bill We’re screwed Due to procedural issues, this means that the bill did not receive enough votes for or against the bill to pass. Two Republicans and five Democrats, including Mr. Phelan, were recorded as absent, while 54 Democrats voted to be present.
Allowing absentee or present votes to be recorded reduced the number of MPs needed for the bill to be adopted, leading to its failure. This is a cheap parliamentary trick used to kill bills without a vote against them.
“What happened here is a familiar story,” Harrison told the Daily Caller. “The Texas Senate passed a Republican priority that would allow only U.S. citizens to vote. It came home to Texas. And Dade Phelan said not only he, but his leadership team, passed it,” I didn’t try to make it happen.” (ROOKE: Biden’s border crisis exposes secrets of America’s dirty foreign agents)
Republicans attempted to pass an amendment to the Texas Constitution that would require only U.S. citizens to vote in elections. A group of 54 Democratic members of the Texas House of Representatives blocked the bill with a “yes” vote, rejecting the 100 votes needed for the bill. #txlege https://t.co/e21zPFKlfx

“In fact, Mr. Dade Phelan authorized several of his chosen committee chairs not to support this policy. Dade Phelan and his leadership team will pass this in the House. “If we had wanted it, the House would have passed it,” he added. “To be clear, it’s not just Dade. There are many people on his leadership team who want to make him a scapegoat now that he’s having a rough time in the primary.”Dade It is very important that people understand that Phelan could only do so with the full support of a liberal leadership team.
Harrison said that the day the Texas House considered SJ35, most of Phelan’s leadership, including Democrats, were in the chamber to vote. He blamed Phelan for the bill’s failure, saying he should have made it a priority because it was an election integrity issue.
“If it was important to the Speaker, of course he should have voted for it. Many times during the session, when there were important issues, he spoke from the podium and said, He was willing to vote in favor of the speaker. For example, he voted to impeach Paxton. He could have voted for this,” Harrison said.
He said Phelan’s absentee ballot was evidence of the Texas state chairman’s “failure to provide leadership to protect election integrity,” which is “indefensible” at a time when illegal immigration is rampant in the state. It added that this was a measure. (Luke: If it’s really a “right-wing conspiracy theory,” why do Democrats keep proving it’s real?)
“At this moment when our state and nation are being invaded, [by illegal immigrants], and Democrats plan to turn them all into voters, but the Texas House of Representatives has struck down a constitutional amendment that would have required them to be citizens to vote. It’s outrageous,” Harrison told the Daily Caller. “This is just one example of how the so-called Republican leadership of the Texas House of Representatives has failed their voters and future generations.”

Strategic Political Management, a Dallas, Texas-based group that supports SJR35 and is working to pass similar legislation in other states, called the bill’s failure a major disappointment in the 88th session, according to the Daily. told the Kohler newspaper. The group plans to make this a key issue in the 2024 general election.
“When I saw a member of the Texas House of Representatives cast an ‘existence’ vote on the Citizens-Only Amendment, a quiet storm was brewing at the heart of our democracy,” said Charlie Colleen, partner at Strategic Political Management. “It seemed like it was happening,” he told the Daily Caller. . “Each ‘now’ vote was a thunderous silence, a chasm where a conviction should have stood. But this is not the end. It is a call to action. Our organization… We are ready to rally for the 2024 Texas election, defend those who support us, and remind voters how their representatives stand at this critical moment. Vote Gifts are not accepted.”
Dade Phelan did not respond to multiple requests from The Daily Caller for an explanation for his absentee vote on SJR35.
