Royce White wins surprise backing of Minnesota GOP in race against Amy Klobuchar

Former NBA player Royce White won a surprise endorsement from the Minnesota Republican Party over the weekend in his bid to challenge Democratic Sen. Amy Klobuchar.

White, 33, who once led protests after the killing of George Floyd and is now an ardent supporter of former President Donald Trump, spoke at the state Republican convention Saturday at the River Center in St. Paul. It received 67% support.

White was introduced at the convention in a video featuring former Trump aide Steve Bannon, a longtime supporter of Trump’s candidacy.

The former athlete was once a first-round NBA draft pick, but his career was hampered by mental health struggles and a fear of flying.

He was drafted by the Houston Rockets, but was later traded to the Philadelphia 76ers. Eventually, he worked in Ice Cube’s Big3 Basketball League and Canada’s National Basketball League.

At one point while playing in the Big 3 League, White scrawled messages on his head, including “Trump won,” “Free the Uyghurs,” and “Protect RFK Jr.”

He first ran for political office in 2022, when he ran unsuccessfully in the Republican primary against Squad member Rep. Ilhan Omar (D-Minnesota).

In his acceptance speech at the party’s convention over the weekend, White railed against the power of money in politics and slammed criticism of his campaign’s finances.

If White ultimately wins the Republican nomination, she will face off against Klobuchar (D-Minnesota), who is seeking a fourth term in the Senate.

In the last election, Klobuchar defeated her Republican opponent 60.31% to 36.21%.
