Challenges Await in Turkey Amid Tensions
Secretary of State Marco Rubio expressed a rather bleak outlook ahead of the anticipated talks in Turkey scheduled for Friday, pointing out that neither Russian President Vladimir Putin nor Donald Trump would be attending. This announcement came after the originally planned discussions on Thursday devolved into chaos. Delegations from both Russia and Ukraine, including Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, had arrived at various locations in Turkey, only to learn that Putin would not be participating.
Frustration appears to be mounting as delegates and mediators grapple with uncertainty. There’s been talk about whether any meetings would even happen on Thursday, and now the discussions have been postponed to Friday.
Rubio stated, “Honestly, it’s clear that the only path to a breakthrough is a dialogue between President Trump and Putin.” He emphasized that this straightforward engagement is crucial for any real progress.
As for Trump, he noted that any productive outcomes rely significantly on him and Putin having that all-important conversation. Interestingly, Trump made headlines earlier this week by suggesting he might travel from the UAE to Turkey, contingent on the talks going ahead as planned. It was surprising, given that a U.S. president typically wouldn’t alter a Middle East tour for such negotiations.
Meanwhile, the Kremlin confirmed on Thursday that Putin would indeed skip the peace talks. Trump, while boarding Air Force One, indicated that a scheduling misunderstanding might be to blame for Putin’s absence, reiterating that substantial advancements wouldn’t occur until he and Putin connect.
“Nothing’s going to progress until we meet, period,” Trump’s comments suggested a sense of urgency. However, the details of any future discussions between Trump and Putin remain ambiguous at this stage.
In a statement regarding the talks, Rubio reiterated, “The only way we can make a breakthrough here is for President Trump to sit face to face with Putin and decide on a potential path to peace.”
Zelenskyy remarked, expressing his dissatisfaction with the situation. He noted, “There’s no set meeting time, no agenda, and no agreed delegation levels. It’s a personal slight towards both Erdogan and Trump.” This sentiment was shared during a press conference after his meeting with Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan.
