Russell M. Nelson Passes Away at 101
Church officials reported that Russell M. Nelson, the president of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, passed away peacefully at his home in Salt Lake City around 10 PM local time.
Nelson, the longest-serving president in the church’s history, led the faith community since 2018, though he had been an apostle since 1984. His influence reached across more than 30 countries and territories in the U.S.
In addition to his religious role, he was also a prominent cardiac surgeon credited with advancements in artificial heart and lung technology.
There’s been an outpouring of tributes on social media from both political leaders and church members. One post expressed heartfelt appreciation for President Nelson’s family and the global community of Latter-day Saints who mourn his loss. Another remarked on his remarkable life, noting, “His incredible 101 years are a testament to service, faith, and vision.”
Many shared personal anecdotes, like former Senator Mitt Romney, who highlighted Nelson’s remarkable ability to grow the church but also emphasized the personal kindness he exhibited.
Some expressed a mix of sadness and solace in his passing. Glenn Beck, for example, mentioned feeling both sorrow and joy for Nelson, suggesting that this moment calls for prayers for both him and those who are grieving.
Russell M. Nelson is survived by his wife, Wendy, their ten children, and a large number of grandchildren and great-grandchildren. His legacy, it seems, will endure through the many lives he touched during his long and impactful journey.
