Russia calls for restraint after Iranian strikes on Israel

Russia said on Sunday it was extremely concerned about an Iranian attack on Israel and called on all parties to exercise restraint, but said tensions would remain high until the Israeli-Palestinian conflict is resolved.

Russia’s Foreign Ministry said in a statement about the Iranian attack that it “expresses extreme concern at the new dangerous escalation in the region.” “I call on everyone involved to exercise restraint,” he said.

Russia noted that Tehran said the attack took place within its right to self-defense, following an Israeli attack on the Iranian consulate in Damascus that the government condemned.

Russia, which has close ties to Iran, said Western countries had thwarted its attempts to respond to Israel’s attack on its consulate in the United Nations Security Council.

However, former Russian president Dmitry Medvedev said a war between Israel and Iran would worsen Joe Biden’s prospects for re-election as US president.

“The United States does not want a major war in the Middle East,” President Medvedev said on Telegram. “Killings in Gaza will worsen Biden’s electoral prospects and war between Israel and Iran will bring further uncertainty.”
