Russia deploys Oreshnik missile in recent attack on Ukraine

On Friday, Russia announced it had deployed a new hypersonic missile, the Oleshnik, in its strikes against Ukraine. This action followed what the Kremlin described as an attempted drone assault by Ukraine aimed at President Vladimir Putin’s residence—a claim Ukraine has denied.

Ukraine and U.S. officials have expressed skepticism regarding Russia’s assertion about the alleged drone incident that reportedly took place on December 29. Ukrainian representatives characterized it as a “ridiculous lie.” Interestingly, even Donald Trump seemed to question the claim, suggesting that he doubted any airstrike occurred and implying that unrelated events took place nearby.

As reported, this marks the second deployment of the Oleshnik missile, which President Putin stated is so fast that interception isn’t feasible. The Russian Ministry of Defense claimed this missile strike specifically targeted critical infrastructure, alongside the use of unmanned attack aircraft and precise long-range weaponry, both land and sea.

While the Russian government didn’t specify where the Oleshnik missile impacted, media outlets and military commentators indicated that it was aimed at an underground natural gas facility in the Lviv region of western Ukraine. The Mayor of Lviv, Andriy Sadovy, confirmed damage to essential infrastructure but didn’t share specific details.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy addressed the situation on social media, indicating that the aftermath was still unfolding. He noted that twenty residential buildings were damaged and, tragically, four fatalities had been reported in the capital, including one emergency responder. Zelenskiy expressed his condolences to the victims’ families.

According to officials, the recent attack involved a considerable scale of weaponry, including 242 drones, 13 ballistic missiles, an Oleshnik missile, and 22 cruise missiles, primarily targeting energy installations amid a harsh cold snap. Zelenskiy mentioned the attack was clearly intended to disrupt the lives of ordinary citizens while asserting that efforts were ongoing to restore heating and electricity.

Additionally, Zelenskiy pointed out that the Qatari embassy building was also affected. He emphasized the need for a robust global response, particularly from the United States. He believes it’s crucial for Russia to understand that it must prioritize diplomacy rather than violence.

A spokesperson from the U.S. State Department reiterated America’s commitment to resolving the conflict through diplomatic channels, highlighting that this is essential for achieving lasting peace. Meanwhile, the White House has been approached for further comments on the unfolding situation.
