KYIV, Ukraine (AP) – Ukraine was hit by a powerful missile attack by Russia early Monday that struck near the front lines of fighting in the east, center and west, killing one person and wounding at least 30 others.
The highest casualties were in the Dnipropetrovsk region, where a woman was killed in a missile attack on the outskirts of the city of Krivy Riv, and 24 people were injured in an attack on the city of Novomoskovsk. In Kryvi Ri itself, more than 20 homes and a shopping center were damaged in the missile attack, regional governor Serhii Lysak said.
At least four missiles hit Kharkov, the country's second-largest city, injuring one person, Mayor Ihor Terekhov said. Regional governor Ole Sinievov also said that two people were injured in the attack on the village of Zmiiv, and two more were trapped under the rubble.
In Zaporizhia, a major city on the Dnipro River, two people were injured in a missile attack on a residential area, regional governor Yuri Marashko announced.
According to Governor Oleksandr Prokudin, in the past 24 hours Russian forces fired 131 shells into the Kherson region, killing two people and wounding five.
Since Russian forces withdrew from the city of Kherson east of the Dnipro River in the fall of 2022, the city of Kherson and its surrounding areas have been consistently targeted.
At least six explosions rocked central Khmelnytsky on Monday morning, but no immediate details on casualties or damage were available.
Ukraine's military said on Monday that Russian troops had unsuccessfully attempted to advance in several areas over the past day, including around Ryman in the Kharkiv region, Donetsk and Zaporizhzhya regions.
Khmelnytsky regional authorities said at least six explosions were heard during the morning missile attack, but no casualties or damage were immediately reported.
Kyiv Mayor Vitaly Klitschko announced that a man injured in the Jan. 2 missile attack died Monday in a Kyiv hospital. Another man injured in the same attack died in Kharkiv on Monday, Sinievov said.
