Russia may escalate the war by entering NATO airspace, Waltz states in his first public speech as UN ambassador.

US Ambassador Urges Russia to De-escalate Tensions

Mike Waltz, the US ambassador to the United Nations, has called on Moscow to “urgently stop” its recent military activities, including drone incursions into Poland and jet operations in Estonia’s airspace within a span of just two weeks.

“As President Trump and the current US President dedicate significant time and effort to resolve this devastating conflict between Russia and Ukraine, we hope Russia will seek ways to de-escalate rather than escalate tensions,” Waltz stated during a UN National Security Council meeting on Monday.

His remarks echoed concerns raised during a UNSC briefing about escalating activities out of Russia. Waltz noted that Moscow “sent three sailing aircraft into Estonian airspace, encroaching within 15 miles of the Estonian Parliament.”

Waltz commented, “This event adds to the already tense situation with Ukraine following Russian drone incursions, subsequently followed by the entry into Polish airspace. It creates the impression that Russia may either aim to provoke more countries or lacks full control over those operating its fighter jets and drones.”

“Both of these possibilities are quite perplexing, especially considering Russia’s status as a nuclear power with a global reach.”

Waltz was confirmed to his position on Friday, nearly four months after stepping down as Trump’s national security adviser.

This escalation follows incidents where Russian drones reportedly violated Polish airspace during extensive air assaults on Ukraine, which Warsaw deemed provocative.

Compounding these tensions, some senior officials, including Vice President JD Vance and Secretary of War Pete Hegses, accidentally included journalists in a chat about strategies for military action in Yemen.

With the UN General Assembly taking place in New York this week, Waltz reiterated that the US “will defend every inch of NATO.” He expressed, “Just nine days ago, we discussed numerous violations by military drones against Polish airspace. We urged Russia to end the war in Ukraine and cease actions that could heighten the conflict.”

Waltz affirmed, “The US stands shoulder to shoulder with our NATO allies in light of these airspace violations. I want to stress that the United States and our allies will protect every inch of NATO territory.”

He further called on Russia to “respect the sovereignty of neighboring countries” and echoed President Trump’s invitation for Russian President Vladimir Putin to meet with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky.

“I urge Russia to engage in direct negotiations with Ukraine to find an end to this war,” he concluded.
